Speed cameras

Anyone know the score on them?
Definitely got flashed on my way to work on the 21st December - so now it is 21 days. Still have received nothing.
Anyone got any idea how long before I don't have to worry? Could really do with keeping a clean license right now...

Surely Willtell the 14 day limit applies only in UK law therefore only to offences committed in the UK? If you speed in France then the time limit is the French one, no matter where you live. I suspect the real reason for not pursuing drivers from abroad is simply that it's usually not worth it, given the low importance of a speeding offence and the limited time and resources to process an investigation abroad.

I believe you to be right about the UK limits joyo.
Here's some interesting facts for you if you are driving across Europe this summer. A speed camera notification can take up to 360 in Italy and it's a month or more in most of the EU countries I believe.
In UK it's 14 days. When I meet up with my British pals a few times a year to ride across Europe on our motor bikes to Moto GP events in France Spain Italy Austria etc my English registration pals have never once received a speeding notice from abroad.
I always slow for the cameras and watch them get flashed and then catch back up as I have a French registration and prefer not to take a chance. However, I am convinced they never get nicked because they have to be notified within 14 days which is impossible for most continentals it seems. The law was changed over a year ago to allow British driver details to be given out but they have never once been fined...

Can't be done doing 32mph in 30mph limit, it's 10% plus 2mph, therefore only be done doing 35mph plus..... Riddle you are on the fibble

Sorry Riddle but your story is unlikely. When you are flashed by a speed camera, the photograph records your speed only, as measured by a separate (usually radar) device - that's what triggers the camera in the first place. From your account, the camera went off because a car nearby was doing 40 mph +, in which case the photo would have recorded that car's speed, not yours.
Do there would be no admissible evidence of the speed your car was travelling. If your car happened to be in the same photograph as the faster car, the police could not use the lines painted on the road to prove the case against you. They are just there to give confidence that the measuring equipment is accurate.

What defjam said. The NIP must be sent to the registered keeper within 14 days of the alleged offence. Proof of posting to the keeper's last known address is enough. If you are the reg keeper and DVLA have your correct current address, you should have received the NIP by now. If the police sent it but they have no reply, they will send another one before they take any further action, because a court is unlikely to believe that 2 separate NIPs can get lost en route.
As others have said, if you are not the registered keeper, you may not get a NIP for some time, as whoever is the keeper (e.g. your company, leasing company, car hire firm, wife etc) has up to 28 days to name the driver at the time of the alleged offence.

Got done for speeding in a 30 mph zone on the A4 poodling along on the inside lane doing 32 mph. Sure I have done similar in the exact same location going approx 35 mph+ as the camera is obviously set to go off at about 40 mph+. What I didn't legislate for was someone coming up on the outside lane doing 40 mph+ and triggering the camera as I passed it going 32mph so I got done as well as him.
Similar happened on a large traffic lights roundabout junction as I was passing through the lights started to change to amber and a Porsche cut me up forcing me to brake, then as I continued to accelerate away the junction camera light flashed and I got done again, and the other driver who cut me up got away.
There's no justice.

Just got a letter a month after offence but car is leased and think they have longer in those circumstances- as such it reads more threatening! It actually is my wife's car (although leased by me) and she was driving - she did 37 in a 30mph zone ! Still can't see a way out of it

It really can vary - a few days to a month or so. Got stopped by the police once in Cheshunt and was summoned 6 months later. I really thought I was off the hook .....

Average speed cameras are a bastard but at least thy are safe.
Single fixed speed ones do almost nothing to slow down maniacs as they generally know their location and act accordingly.
Fixed speed cameras cause accidents as well as people slam on the anchors at short notice.
Only half of the bloody things work.

If you see a white van parked up in a spot where you wouldn't normally expect to see one and the front is facing you that is a always a good time to test your brakes.
ANPR cameras on the back and Z- cars will be in a layby just up the road...

No one can prove any mail has been read or received unless it has been sent to an address by recorded or signed for delivery.
Bare that in mind over any letter or mailed correspondence, it's a loophole.

You should be served a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) within 14 days of the offence. This will also include a request for the driver details, you must provide those details within 28 days.
This will be sent by post providing the vehicle is registered to the correct address.
if you don’t get a NIP within the 14 days, it will be worth challenging any threats of prosecution, but you’ll have to prove reasonable doubt that you didn’t receive it.

Note that the NIP only has to be served on the registered keeper within 14 days. There is no time limit for serving a request for driver details. If someone else names you as the driver, for example if you were driving a company car or a hire car, it is quite likely that the first notice will come more than 14 days after the offence.'
